Career Scope & Growth
Respiratory Therapy demand exploded post-COVID and continues to grow at 18-22% CAGR globally. India has only ~5,000 qualified respiratory therapists for a population of 1.4 billion — a structural shortage. US-trained RTs earn USD 70,000–90,000; UK, Canada, and Australia have active immigration pathways for Indian BSc RTs. Top Indian recruiters: Apollo, Fortis, MIOT, Christian Medical College, AIIMS, and corporate ICU chains pay ₹2.4–3.5 LPA entry, ₹5–8 LPA after 5 years. Gulf countries (UAE, Saudi, Kuwait) hire Indian RTs at ₹14–26 LPA. Specialisations include ECMO Specialist, Neonatal RT, Pulmonary Rehab Specialist, Sleep Technologist, and Home Ventilation Coordinator.
Higher Studies & Specialisation Pathways
After BSc Respiratory Therapy, here are the pathways to specialise further or pursue international careers.
MSc Respiratory Therapy
2-year specialisation. Opens academic, ICU lead, and ECMO Specialist roles. Offered at Manipal, KMCT, and select institutions.
PG Diploma in Neonatal RT
1-year specialised program. Neonatal RTs in NICUs earn 30-50% more; rare specialty with high demand.
NBRC RRT (US)
National Board for Respiratory Care — Registered Respiratory Therapist certification. With 1-year US AS-RT bridge, opens US RT roles at USD 70-90k.
ECMO Specialist Certification (ELSO)
Extracorporeal Life Support Organization certification. ECMO specialists earn ₹6-12 LPA in India and ₹25-40 LPA in Gulf.
Best for
Students drawn to critical care, ICU work, and post-COVID high-demand respiratory medicine — with strong abroad migration pathways.
